Management of Organization - Manager, Management and Efficiency, Effectiveness

The first lecture of Management of Organizations at IBA, DU was quite interesting. It started with the definition of Manager. The conclusion of the definition was that,

The person responsible for achieving the goals of an organization is Manager.

The definition of management can also be derived from this very definition and we may attempt to define it as,

Activities for managing the resources to achieve the goals of a business organization is Management; IOW, what a Manager does to fulfill his/her task is Management.

There are different theories on activities of a manager. One of the popular theories is POSLC - Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Leading, Controlling. Another popular theory is POC3/POCCC - Planning, Organizing, Communicating, Coordinating, Controlling.

Now there is 2 other concepts very closely tagged with management, efficiency and effectiveness. The simplest elaborative definition of efficiency I could come up with is,

The amount of non-waste from a process is efficiency. Waste could be from time of a resource to raw material wastage due to machinery. IOW, achieved output divided by expected output from a certain input (which is referred to as only 'input' in texts).

While the simplest elaborative definition of effectiveness I could come up with is,

The ratio of input required to achieve organizational goals. IOW, efficiency aligned with organizational goals.

Though the concepts are quite different the correlation is quite evident -

We need effectiveness to make a organization successful and which can be achieved by efficiency

Which means from a organizational perspective that efficiency is desired for effectiveness, IOW, efficiency is the "supply" to the effectiveness "demand"; we should find a balance between efficiency required and achieved with perspective to effectiveness.

I adore nature and its abundant beauty. I also love my friends and its always nice to capture their happy moments. Its a rare combination to get both of them in a single shot and especially being indoor. The friend in the photo is Subrata and we have been friends for ages.

The image was not taken in a face to face fashion but it was rather taken as a reflection from a mirror and that is one of the reason for not having a tight framing, but yet I will always treasure this as a special photograph. And the sunlight is not direct either, if we notice carefully we will see that the light has a effect in a bottom up diagonal fashion and that's because its reflected upon my friend from the glossy floor. To me its truly amazing how reflection can reflect the beauty around us....

About human life

My maternal grandmother died last Saturday. She looked after me for sometime after my birth. I saw photographs of her taking care of me. When I was small I used to visit her every Thursday evening with my mom, sometimes I used to spend the day with her during my holidays. There are thousands of such memory about her.

She was ill for couple of weeks and suffered a lot. Prior to her last sickness she would always tell me that "my time is nearing" and I used to reply her back "so is mine". I saw her is her final days as well she used talk to me and laugh despite her terrible pain and suffering. I can still hear her fearful voice whenever sisters' came to change the saline or came to give IV medicine.

Seeing her condition and conclusion of her life there are some questions in my mind. What is the value of our life? Why do we work so hard for our life on earth? What are we supposed to achieve in life? We strive for all our earthly feelings and belongings, but in our lifetime can we realize what we are supposed to achieve in this life time.

I am still searching for those answers; but my recent experiences have led me to a idea that, every life has a purpose and fulfillment or success of life depends on successfully determining that purpose and fulfilling it. It would be great to know others feeling.

My First Blog

This is my first blog and I am very excited about it. Actually we will be developing a Blog site so doing Requirements engineering. While doing this I found that Blog would be an excellent way to express myself, so I got motivated to use Blog and I plan to use it regularly.

I will be posting Technical, Religious and "Fun" postings in this blog site. I want to share the ideas with the world.
